Overview

This expedition is designed for travelers who want to experience the “Planet of the Apes” landscapes of Lake Abbe and the brilliant white expanse of Lake Assal in a condensed timeframe. You will travel from the coastal capital through the Grand Bara Desert to the Ethiopian border, staying overnight in a traditional Afar campsite to witness the steam-venting limestone chimneys at both sunset and sunrise.

What To Expect

Day 1: Djibouti City to the Chimneys of Lake Abbe

The journey begins with a pickup from the Casino Supermarket or your hotel. Drive through the vast Grand Bara and Petit Bara deserts, making a 60-minute stop in Djibouti City for final provisions. Reach Hotel Gobaad in Dikhil for an included lunch before heading off-road. Pass through the remote settlements of As Eyla and Kouta Bouyya, arriving at Lake Abbe by late afternoon. Spend 2 hours exploring the massive limestone chimneys as they vent sulfurous steam at sunset. Overnight at the Lake Abbe Tourist Camp in a traditional Afar hut.

Day 2: Sunrise at Lake Abbe and the Salt of Lake Assal

Wake before dawn for a spectacular sunrise walk among the chimneys to see colonies of pink flamingos on the lake shore. After breakfast, depart the camp and drive north toward the Rift Valley floor. Spend the afternoon at Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa, walking on the brilliant white salt flats and floating in the turquoise waters. Conclude the tour with a visit to the Ghoubbet-el-Kharab (the Devil’s Abyss) to see Ardoukoba volcano before returning to Djibouti City by late evening.
