This 3-day tour is an adventure into the rugged and rarely visited Chebera Churchura National Park, situated in the hills of Southern Ethiopia. The park is distinguished by its dense, diverse ecosystems, ranging from savannah and woodland to hot springs and permanent water bodies. It is most famous for hosting the country’s highest density of elephants, uniquely known for being un-collared and relatively less accustomed to human presence, offering an authentic and thrilling safari experience. This itinerary focuses on tracking the elusive elephants, enjoying the park’s rich birdlife, and exploring the natural hot springs, all while staying in the remote, beautiful wilderness.
Fly from Addis Ababa (ADD) to a nearby airport like Mizan Teferi (MTF) or Jimma (JIM), followed by a 2–4 hour drive to the Chebera Churchura National Park headquarters and your dedicated lodge or campsite. After settling in, take a late afternoon game drive or a guided walk around the park perimeter. The initial activity will focus on familiarizing yourself with the landscape, spotting common plains game like bushbucks, and enjoying the sunset over the rolling hills.
Begin the day with an early morning start for the main event: elephant tracking. Accompanied by experienced scouts, you will drive and walk into the denser sections of the park, utilizing local knowledge to find the herds of African bush elephants. The remainder of the day is dedicated to exploring the park’s geological features, including a visit to the Chebera Hot Springs, where you can relax or observe the surrounding forest and wildlife. In the late afternoon, enjoy a game drive focusing on areas known for predators like lions and leopards, or other ungulates like buffalo and waterbuck.
Wake up early for a guided bird-watching walk. Chebera Churchura is a paradise for birders, home to over 370 bird species, including several endemics. This walk will focus on the forest margins and riverine areas, looking for species like the Black-winged lovebird and various hornbills. After breakfast, enjoy a final scenic drive out of the park. Drive back to the Mizan Teferi or Jimma airport for your scheduled flight back to Addis Ababa (ADD) or onward travel.
