Tour Difficulty: The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest places on earth, with rough terrain and long drives. A good level of physical fitness is recommended.
Accommodation Style: Lodging in the Danakil is basic, often in open-air huts or simple local guesthouses. Expect shared facilities and limited amenities due to the remote environment.
Climate & Conditions: Temperatures can be extremely high (often above 40°C). Lightweight clothing, sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water are essential.

No Show Policy: Guests who do not arrive on the departure day will be charged 100% of the tour cost.

Your journey begins with a flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. Upon arrival, you will embark on a five-to-six-hour drive through the Afar region to Hamed Ela. Along the way, you will make a stop at the stunning Lake Afdera, a natural salt lake with warm waters, perfect for a refreshing swim. Here, you will also enjoy lunch while soaking in the surreal landscape.
As the journey continues, you will head towards the camping village of Hamed Ela, a gateway to the Danakil Depression’s incredible geological wonders. In the evening, you will visit Lake Asale, a vast expanse of salt flats, where the setting sun casts a golden glow over the crystalline formations. The tranquil surroundings provide a perfect opportunity to relax with a glass of wine or beer while taking in the breathtaking scenery. Overnight: Open air camping at Hamed Ela
After breakfast, drive to the incredible Dallol Depression, 125 meters below sea level, and explore its vibrant mineral formations, Lake Assal, and traditional camel caravans transporting salt. Continue with a four-hour drive toward Erta Ale, crossing lava fields and Afar villages. After arriving at the campsite and having an early dinner, begin a one-hour trek to the volcano’s summit. Under the night sky, experience the unforgettable sight of Erta Ale’s active lava lake before returning to camp to sleep under the stars.

Before dawn, you will have the opportunity to visit the boiling lava lake once more, watching as the fiery glow contrasts against the early morning sky. After capturing this final breathtaking view, you will return to the campsite for breakfast before beginning your journey back to Semera.
The return trip includes a two-hour drive to Afdera, followed by a three-and-a-half-hour drive along an asphalt road to Semera Airport. Along the way, you will have time to reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days, as you prepare for your departure back to Addis Ababa.
