Known for its intense heat, colorful volcanic features, and salt mining culture, this journey offers a raw and unforgettable adventure through the lowest and hottest inhabited place on Earth.

What To Expect

Day 01: Semera – Dallol

After your early morning pickup from Semera, drive toward the northern Danakil Depression. Along the way, marvel at the stark landscapes of the Afar region, including lava fields, salt plains, and small desert villages. Arrive at Dallol, one of the hottest and most colorful places on Earth. Explore the unique hydrothermal formations, acid pools, and otherworldly landscapes created by volcanic activity and mineral deposits. Witness the surreal colors of the salt formations and bubbling sulfur springs, a photographer’s paradise. Camp overnight near Dallol under the vast desert sky.

 

Day 02: Dallol – Erta Ale Volcano

Wake up early to enjoy sunrise over the Dallol area, when the vibrant colors of the terrain become even more dramatic. After breakfast, drive through the Danakil Desert toward Erta Ale, the “Smoking Mountain,” a continuously active basaltic shield volcano. En route, cross vast salt flats and see traditional Afar salt-mining villages. Arrive near Erta Ale in the afternoon, rest, and prepare for an overnight hike. In the evening, hike up the volcano to witness the glowing lava lake and spectacular volcanic activity—a truly unforgettable natural phenomenon. Camp overnight near Erta Ale.

 

Day 03: Erta Ale – Lake Afrera

After descending from Erta Ale, drive south toward Lake Afrera, a saline lake known for its brilliant turquoise waters and salt harvesting activities. On the way, admire endless desert landscapes and rugged volcanic terrain. Arrive at Lake Afrera and explore the salt flats, meeting local Afar salt miners and learning about traditional salt extraction methods. Enjoy the extraordinary scenery of the lake surrounded by black volcanic mountains, a striking contrast to the white salt plains. Camp overnight near Lake Afrera and enjoy the serene desert sunset.

 

Day 04: Lake Afrera – Semera

After breakfast, start your journey back to Semera, driving through the northern Afar landscapes and desert plains. Along the way, stop at interesting geological formations and small Afar villages, witnessing the traditional lifestyle of the local people. Arrive in Semera by the afternoon, concluding the four-day adventure in the Danakil Depression. Guests are then dropped off at the airport, hotel, or central location in Semera, completing a tour full of extreme landscapes, volcanoes, salt deserts, and vibrant Afar culture.
