The itinerary includes a day trip to Keren, famed for its World War II history and lively markets, followed by an unforgettable drive down the Great Rift Valley escarpment to Massawa, the “Pearl of the Red Sea,” a historic port city showcasing a mix of Ottoman and Italian ruins. This tour moves quickly and requires a high degree of logistical planning, particularly regarding mandatory travel permits.

What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Asmara – Modernist Architecture Tour

Arrive at Asmara International Airport (ASM). Transfer to your hotel for check-in. In the afternoon, begin a walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site of **Asmara**, often dubbed ‘Piccola Roma’. Focus on its spectacular modernist architecture, including the iconic **Fiat Tagliero Building** (a futuristic petrol station), the **Cinema Impero**, and the **Opera House (Cinema Asmara)**. Visit the **Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary** and the central **Liberation Avenue**. Conclude the day by visiting the bustling **Medeber Market** (the artisanal metalworking/recycling district). Overnight in Asmara.

Day 2: Asmara – Keren – Asmara Day Trip

Begin an early drive to **Keren** (approx. 2-hour drive one way), a strategically important town during World War II. The journey offers beautiful views of the highlands. Upon arrival, explore Keren’s historical sites: the **British and Italian World War II Cemeteries**, and the shrine of **Mariam Dearit**, a place of pilgrimage located inside a giant Baobab tree. If the day is a **Monday**, visit the famous and colorful **Camel Market** and livestock market. In the late afternoon, drive back to Asmara. Overnight in Asmara.

Day 3: Asmara – Massawa (Red Sea Coast)

Embark on a spectacular drive down the escarpment (approx. 3-hour drive) towards the Red Sea coast to **Massawa**, known as the ‘Pearl of the Red Sea’. The road descends dramatically, passing through three different climate zones. Massawa is a hot port city with an eclectic blend of Turkish, Egyptian, and Italian architecture. Check into your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring the **Massawa Old Town**, viewing the ruins of the Ottoman and Italian buildings and historical mosques like the **Shafi Mosque**. Enjoy the evening atmosphere and fresh seafood dinner by the sea. Overnight in Massawa.

Day 4: Massawa Exploration – Return to Asmara – Departure

**Morning Option 1 (Leisurely):** Take a short boat trip to nearby **Green Island** for quick swimming or snorkeling (requires an extra permit). **Morning Option 2 (Historical):** Continue exploring the port and seaside areas of Massawa. In the late morning, begin the scenic drive back uphill to **Asmara**.
