9 Days Ethiopian Timket (Epiphany) Festival Tour

  • Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Lalibela, Axum
  • 2 booked
  • Duration: 9 days
  • Language: English

Overview

This 9-day tour is a specialized journey centered on the Timket Festival (Epiphany), Ethiopia’s most vibrant religious celebration, witnessed at its epicenter in Gondar at the historic Fasilidas’ Bath. The itinerary is strategically designed to ensure participation in both the Ketera (Eve of Timket) procession and the main Timket ceremony, which takes place annually on January 18th and 19th. Beyond the festival, the tour efficiently covers the remainder of the Historical Route, including the Lake Tana monasteries in Bahir Dar, the dramatic Simien Mountains, the ancient stelae of Axum, and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, utilizing three domestic flights to connect these remote, UNESCO-listed destinations.

What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and Transfer to Bahir Dar

Arrive at Bole International Airport (ADD). Take an immediate domestic connecting flight (approx. 1 hour) to **Bahir Dar** (BJR). Check into your hotel. In the afternoon, take a boat trip on **Lake Tana** (the source of the Blue Nile). Visit the ancient, brightly painted monasteries on the **Zegie Peninsula** (like Ura Kidane Mehret), known for their colorful frescoes and religious manuscripts. Overnight in Bahir Dar.

Day 2: Bahir Dar – Blue Nile Falls and Drive to Gondar

In the morning, drive to the **Blue Nile Falls** (*Tis Abay* or ‘Great Smoke’) (approx. 1.5-hour drive one way). Take a short hike to the viewpoint of the falls. Return to Bahir Dar, have lunch, and then drive overland to **Gondar** (approx. 3 hours). The afternoon is reserved for early sightseeing of the city’s highlights, such as the **Fasil Ghebbi** (Royal Enclosure), a UNESCO World Heritage site with 17th-century castles. Overnight in Gondar.

Day 3: Gondar – Timket Eve (Ketera) Ceremony

In the morning, complete the Gondar historic tour, visiting the beautiful **Debre Berhan Selassie Church** (famous for its ceiling paintings of winged cherubs) and the **Fasilidas’ Bath** (which will be filled for the festival). In the late afternoon, join the thousands of white-robed pilgrims to witness the **Ketera** procession. Priests, accompanied by chanting and drumming, parade the **Tabots** (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) from every church in the city to Fasilidas’ Bath, where they will rest overnight. Overnight in Gondar.

Day 4: Timket Festival – Gondar

**Timket Day!** Wake up before dawn and walk to Fasilidas’ Bath. Attend the sunrise rituals and the main **Epiphany** ceremony. The climax is the celebratory blessing and sprinkling of the water (symbolizing Christ’s baptism), followed by joyous singing, dancing, and chanting by thousands of priests, deacons, and pilgrims. After the ceremony, join the colorful procession as the Tabots are returned to their respective churches. Spend the late afternoon resting. Overnight in Gondar.

Day 5: Excursion to Simien Mountains National Park

Begin a long day trip (early start essential). Drive from Gondar to Debark (park HQ) and enter the **Simien Mountains National Park** (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Drive and take a light 2–3 hour trek along the escarpment, offering breathtaking views of the “Roof of Africa.” The highlight is encountering the large troops of the endemic **Gelada Baboons** (the ‘bleeding heart monkey’). Return late afternoon to Gondar. Overnight in Gondar.

Day 6: Fly to Axum – Historic City Tour

Transfer to Gondar Airport (GDQ) for a short domestic flight to **Axum** (AXU). Axum is the ancient capital of the Axumite Kingdom. In the afternoon, explore the **Stele Fields** (Giant Obelisks), which date back to the 4th century. Also visit the ruins of the **Queen of Sheba’s Palace** and the **Church of St. Mary of Zion**, which is reputed to hold the original Ark of the Covenant. Overnight in Axum.

Day 7: Fly to Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches (First Cluster)

Transfer to Axum Airport (AXU) for a domestic flight to **Lalibela** (LLI). Check into your hotel. In the afternoon, begin exploring the incredible UNESCO World Heritage site of the **Rock-Hewn Churches**. Visit the **First Cluster** of churches, including **Bet Medhane Alem** (the largest monolithic church in the world) and **Bet Maryam**, all carved from single blocks of volcanic rock in the 12th century. Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 8: Lalibela – Remaining Churches

Complete the church tour. Start with the **Second Cluster**, which includes Bet Gabriel-Rufael and Bet Amanuel. Then, visit the isolated, iconic **Bet Giyorgis** (House of St. George), carved in the shape of a perfect Greek cross and regarded as an architectural masterpiece. In the afternoon, take a short drive or mule ride to a church outside the town, such as **Asheten Mariam** (weather permitting), for panoramic views. Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 9: Lalibela – Addis Ababa – Departure

Enjoy a final breakfast in Lalibela. Transfer to Lalibela Airport (LLI) for your domestic flight back to **Addis Ababa** (ADD). Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, take a final brief city tour or have a farewell dinner (depending on flight timing) before transferring to Bole International Airport (ADD) for your international departure.
