This full-day tour is a relaxing escape from Addis Ababa to Lake Langano, situated approximately 200 km south of the capital in the Great Rift Valley. Langano is uniquely distinguished as the only lake in Ethiopia safe for swimming, making it a favorite spot for water-based activities and sunbathing. The tour involves a scenic 3 to 4-hour drive each way and includes a stop at Lake Ziway for birdwatching before dedicating the afternoon to enjoying the shores of Langano, often utilizing the facilities of one of the lakeside resorts for day use.
Depart early from your hotel in Addis Ababa. The drive south takes you along the well-maintained highway that descends into the Great Rift Valley, passing through the towns of Bishoftu and Mojo. An early start is essential to maximize daylight time at the lake.
Stop briefly at Lake Ziway, the first of the major Rift Valley Lakes encountered. This freshwater lake is famous for its rich birdlife, including pelicans, cormorants, and storks. Spend about 30–45 minutes birdwatching and enjoying the view of the lake’s islands before continuing south.
Arrive at Lake Langano. The tour will utilize the facilities of a selected resort (such as Sabana Beach Resort or similar) for day use access. Check in and prepare for the afternoon activities.
Enjoy a relaxing lunch at the resort’s restaurant (either packed picnic or resort-provided). Afterwards, take advantage of the resort’s facilities and the sandy beach.
Spend the core afternoon enjoying Lake Langano’s unique, rust-colored waters. Activities may include swimming (safe from bilharzia), lakeside relaxation, light nature walks in the surrounding acacia woodlands, or optional rental of a kayak or canoe (subject to availability and extra cost).
Depart from the Lake Langano resort and begin the long drive back to Addis Ababa. A final break for coffee or snacks will be taken en route.
Arrive back in Addis Ababa and drop-off at your hotel or residence, concluding the full-day tour.
