Located about 155 km west of Addis Ababa, Wenchi is a spectacular lake nestled inside the caldera of an extinct volcano, situated at an altitude of over 3,300 meters. The trip involves a scenic 3-hour drive followed by a descent into the crater to enjoy boat trips, visit the island monastery of Kirkos, and explore hot springs and waterfalls. The area is managed by a local eco-tourism association and is perfect for travelers who enjoy moderate physical activity combined with stunning highland landscapes.
Depart Addis Ababa early and head west via the Ambo Road. The journey takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours on paved roads. An early start is necessary to allow sufficient time for all activities within the crater.
Arrive at the Wenchi Eco-Tourism Association office on the crater rim. Meet the mandatory local guide and complete registration and fee payments. Visitors can choose to descend to the lake by hiking (1.5-2 hours) or by taking a mule/horseback ride (faster).
Hike or ride down the 4 km trail to the lakeshore, enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including waterfalls and hot springs. Take a boat across the lake to visit the historic Kirkos Monastery (16th-century) located on an island in the lake center. This is the main highlight of the trip.
Enjoy a packed picnic lunch at a scenic spot on the lakeshore or near the hot springs. Afterwards, begin the ascent back up to the crater rim (1.5–2 hours hiking uphill, or shorter via mule/horse). Take a moment for final views of the lake before departing.
Depart from Wenchi Crater Lake in the late afternoon. The return journey takes 3 to 3.5 hours, arriving back at your accommodation in Addis Ababa in the early evening (7:00 PM or later).
