Overview

This 3-day trekking itinerary provides an immersive introduction to the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site often referred to as the “Roof of Africa.” The trek starts from Gondar and focuses on the dramatic western section of the park, encompassing the escarpment views between Sankaber, Geech, and the famed Imet Gogo viewpoint. Trekkers will experience the spectacular jagged peaks, deep valleys, and unique high-altitude ecosystem, with excellent opportunities to encounter the endemic Gelada baboons and Giant Lobelia plants. The trip involves high-altitude camping and moderate to challenging daily hikes, requiring a good level of physical fitness.

What To Expect

Day 1: Gondar to Sankaber Camp (3,250m)

Start with an early morning drive from Gondar to Debark (about 3 hours) to finalize park formalities, collect the mandatory guide, scout, and cook. Drive into the park and begin the 3-4 hour introductory hike to Sankaber camp. This trek passes along the escarpment ridge, offering first stunning views and excellent chances to spot large troops of the endemic Gelada baboons. Overnight camping at Sankaber.

Day 2: Sankaber to Geech Camp (3,600m)

Hike for 5-7 hours (approx. 12-15 km) along the edge of the escarpment. The trail descends into a valley before reaching the viewpoint for the spectacular Jinbar Waterfall, which plunges into the Geech abyss. Continue the ascent through the Geech village and into the Giant Lobelia moorlands to reach Geech camp. Optional sunset hike to Kedadit viewpoint for panoramic views. Overnight camping at Geech.

Day 3: Geech, Imet Gogo, and Return to Gondar

Hike early morning from Geech towards the Imet Gogo viewpoint (3,926m), the highest point of the trek, offering 360-degree views of the canyon and peaks. This section is often considered the most magnificent. After descending from the peak, hike back towards the road at a designated collection point (often near Ambaras or similar). Meet the waiting vehicle and begin the long drive back to Debark and onward to Gondar (total drive approx. 5-6 hours).
