Overview

This 6-day trek through Bale Mountains National Park is a deep immersion into one of Africa’s most unique high-altitude landscapes and biodiversity hotspots. The route covers the park’s primary ecosystems, from the vast afro-alpine meadows and forests to the dramatic peaks of the Sanetti Plateau and Mount Batu. Trekkers will spend their days at altitudes exceeding 3,500 meters, maximizing the chances of encountering nearly all of the park’s endemic mammals, including the elusive Ethiopian Wolf, the mountain Nyala, and the giant molerat. This trip is physically demanding due to the altitude and long hiking days but offers unparalleled natural beauty and wildlife viewing opportunities.

What To Expect

Day 1: Drive to Dinsho and Start Trek to Fingera Camp (3,500m)

Drive from Addis Ababa to Dinsho (approx. 8–10 hours) or fly to Robe/Goba and drive to Dinsho (BMNP Headquarters). Register and meet the mandatory scout, guide, and support staff (cook, mule handlers). Begin a short 2–3 hour trek to Fingera or Geysay Valley camp, providing an initial gentle acclimatization walk through the juniper forest and afro-alpine meadows. Look for Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s bushbuck.

Day 2: Trek to Wasema Camp (3,700m)

Trek for 5–7 hours across the wide, undulating afro-alpine landscape. The route offers expansive views of the Gaysay grasslands and the surrounding valleys. This section is excellent for spotting the endemic Giant Molerat and a variety of raptors. Overnight camping at Wasema, a scenic campsite with views of the vast wilderness.

Day 3: Trek to Sinaar Camp (3,900m) – Crossing the Sanetti Plateau

A full day of trekking (6–8 hours) that involves ascending onto the high Sanetti Plateau, the largest area of afro-alpine habitat in Africa. The landscape is characterized by Giant Lobelias and Ericaceous moorlands. Cross the plateau, keeping a keen eye out for the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf, often seen hunting rodents here. This is a cold and challenging day. Overnight camping at Sinaar, near the plateau’s edge.

Day 4: Summit Attempt or Plateau Exploration and Trek to Rafu Camp (4,000m)

Trek for 6–8 hours. Ascend to a high point on the plateau, potentially Mount Batu (4,203m) for those acclimatized, or explore the highest sections for the best wolf spotting opportunities. This day provides the most isolated and spectacular views. Trek down to a sheltered campsite like Rafu, nestled among the dramatic mountain scenery. Overnight camping at Rafu, the highest camp on this route.

Day 5: Descent and Trek to Katcha Camp (3,600m)

Begin the long descent from the high plateau, trekking for 6–7 hours. The route transitions through different vegetation zones, moving out of the bleak alpine area and into more sheltered valleys. Enjoy final views of the plateau. Overnight camping at Katcha or a similar lower campsite, offering a warmer night’s sleep.

Day 6: Final Trek, Drive to Goba/Robe, and Departure

A final short trek (2–3 hours) out of the park to meet the waiting vehicle. Drive to the nearby town of Goba or Robe. Depending on flight schedules, you will have lunch before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa (or continuing with road travel).
