Overview

This 4-day itinerary focuses on community-based trekking within the spectacular sandstone cliffs and mesas of the Gheralta Mountains in Tigray, known for hosting over 120 ancient rock-hewn churches. The tour combines challenging ascents to remote cliff-side churches like Abune Yemata Guh and Maryam Korkor with immersive experiences in the local Tigrayan villages. Accommodation often involves basic community guesthouses or well-situated campsites under giant sycamore trees, ensuring tourism benefits the local residents directly. This trek is ideal for visitors seeking a unique blend of challenging hiking, ancient Christian history, and authentic cultural interaction amidst dramatic, high-desert landscapes.

What To Expect

Day 1: Mekele to Gheralta and Youhans Maqudi

Drive approximately 100 km from Mekele to the Gheralta region (Hawzien area). After arrival and a quick orientation, begin a moderate 4–5 hour trek. The first visit is typically to a church like Youhans Maqudi or Abune Abraham, involving a climb that rewards with colourful, ancient frescoes and views over the plain. Accommodation is often provided at a simple community campsite or lodge near the village of Guh.

Day 2: Trekking to Maryam Papaseit and Village Stay

After breakfast prepared by the local cook, embark on a scenic 5–6 hour trek. The route passes through traditional Tigrayan farmland and small villages, offering chances to observe local life and architecture. The main destination is the rock-hewn church of Maryam Papaseit (or a similar site like Abune Abraham). In the afternoon, engage with the local community, perhaps participating in a coffee ceremony or learning about traditional farming. Overnight camping or stay in a local village guest house.

Day 3: Highest Peak, Maryam Korkor, and Daniel Korkor

Begin the day with a challenging 6–8 hour hike to the highest point of the Gheralta Mountains (around 2,700m), offering spectacular panoramic views of the four corners of the massif. After lunch on the plateau, continue trekking to visit the impressive cluster of churches, including Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, two of the area’s largest churches, known for their stunning views and ancient murals. Overnight camping or stay in a nearby village.

Day 4: Abune Yemata Guh and Departure

Start the final day with a trek to the most famous and dramatically situated church: Abune Yemata Guh. Reaching this church requires a challenging, exposed climb up a sheer cliff face and a final short scramble (safety equipment is provided by local guides). After visiting the church and its incredible 7th-century frescoes, descend and transfer by vehicle back to Hawzien, Mekele, or Axum for flight connections or onward travel.
