Overview

The Menagesha-Suba Forest, located approximately 55 km southwest of Addis Ababa, offers a refreshing escape from the city and a chance to explore one of East Africa’s oldest protected areas. Established by imperial decree in the 15th century, this 2,500-hectare park is a vital remnant of indigenous high-altitude forest, providing a sanctuary for towering trees and unique Ethiopian wildlife. The day trip is perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and bird enthusiasts, offering moderate physical activity with opportunities to spot endemic mammals like the Menelik’s bushbuck and a variety of forest-dwelling bird species.

What To Expect

Pick-up Time 7:30 AM

The day begins with pick-up from your accommodation in Addis Ababa. Head west via Ambo Road, passing through the town of Sebeta and onwards to Menagesha. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. A reliable vehicle, preferably a 4×4, is highly recommended during the rainy season due to potentially challenging rural roads.

Menagesha Suba Forest Arrival and Preparation

Upon arrival at the park headquarters, register and coordinate with a local guide. Guides are available but helpful for detailed birding and plant information, offering insight into the unique ecosystem. Note that facilities are basic (pit latrines, no restaurant or shop), so visitors must bring all necessary supplies, including a packed lunch and adequate water.

Hike the Forest Trails to Damocha Peak

Embark on the main hike through the dense indigenous forest. The trail leads toward Damocha Peak, the highest point in the forest at approximately 3,385 meters. This is a moderate hike (3–4 hours round trip). The trek involves a 1–1.5 hour walk through deep woods and is great for spotting the shy Menelik’s bushbuck, the distinctive Colobus monkeys, and over 100 bird species, including several endemics.

Picnic and Return to Addis Ababa

After completing the main hike and enjoying a well-deserved picnic lunch at a scenic spot in the forest, you will begin the descent back to the park entrance. Depart Menagesha-Suba Forest in the mid-afternoon for the return drive to Addis Ababa, arriving back at your accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening.
