Overview

This 3-day cultural expedition provides a rare and intensive experience with the Mundari cattle-herding tribe near Juba. The Mundari are famous for their deep spiritual and physical connection to their Ankole-Watusi cattle, known for their massive horns. The itinerary focuses on an overnight stay at a traditional cattle camp near the White Nile (often in the Terekeka area), allowing visitors to witness the unique dawn and dusk routines: the herders covering themselves and their prized cattle with white ash from cow dung fires (used as insect repellent and protection), milking, and communal singing.

What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Juba – Transfer to Mundari Tribe

Arrive at Juba International Airport (JUB). After clearing immigration (visa required in advance) and customs, you will be met by your specialized guide and security liaison. Complete essential formalities, including the required *Photography Permit*. Drive north (approx. 2–3 hours, dependent on camp location/road conditions) to the **Mundari Cattle Camp** near Terekeka. Upon arrival, you will meet the chief and set up camp. Spend the evening observing and photographing the spectacular sunset ritual as the herders return with their thousands of cattle, light dung fires, and cover themselves and the animals in ash. Overnight: Tented Camp near the Mundari Camp.

Day 2: Full Day Tribal Immersion at the Cattle Camp

Wake before sunrise to capture the magical morning scene: the herders preparing their cattle for grazing, milking, and performing their daily routines with ash and urine (used as an antiseptic). Spend the full day immersed in the life of the tribe, observing the strict hierarchy, learning about the importance of the cattle (used for currency, status, and dowry), and interacting with the community. You may observe traditional scarification rituals or dances depending on the local timing. The afternoon is dedicated to following the community’s rhythm and taking photographs as requested. Overnight: Tented Camp near the Mundari Camp.

Day 3: Morning at the Tribe – Return to Juba – Departure

Capture the final stunning sunrise and morning activities at the cattle camp. Have a farewell breakfast with the support crew. Pack up the camp and drive back to Juba (approx. 2–3 hours). Upon arrival in Juba, depending on your flight schedule, you may take a brief tour of the capital, including the **John Garang Mausoleum** and the bustling **Konyo Konyo Market**. Transfer to Juba International Airport for your international departure.
