This exclusive five-day photography expedition takes you into the heart of the Jonglei State to witness the extraordinary life of the Dinka people, the largest ethnic group in South Sudan. Known for their legendary height and deep spiritual connection to their cattle, the Dinka offer a visual spectacle unlike any other. This tour focuses on the majestic cattle camps near Bor, where you will capture the ethereal beauty of thousands of long-horned cattle amidst clouds of blue smoke and golden light. It is a journey designed for those who wish to document a culture where wealth, pride, and identity are measured by the beauty of a single bull.
Upon arrival at Juba International Airport (JUB), you will be met by our team and transferred to your hotel. The afternoon is dedicated to government registration and a briefing on the journey ahead. If time permits, enjoy a brief visit to the Konyo Konyo market to see the intersection of South Sudan’s diverse tribes. Overnight in Juba.
After an early breakfast, begin the journey north to Bor, the capital of Jonglei State. This drive takes you through changing landscapes into the heart of Dinka territory. Upon arrival, we meet with local chiefs to present our permits and introduce ourselves to the community. In the late afternoon, we reach the first cattle camp just as the herds begin to return for the evening. Overnight: Camping at the Dinka cattle camp.
Spend a full day immersed in the rhythms of the Dinka camp. Wake up before dawn to capture the “blue hour,” when the smoke from dung fires creates a mystical haze. Document the morning rituals: young men massaging bulls with ash and women milking the cows. Learn about the significance of the “personality bulls” and the complex social hierarchy of the camp. Overnight: Camping at the Dinka cattle camp.
Capture your final morning images as the cattle are driven out to the grazing lands. After breakfast with the community, bid farewell to your hosts and begin the drive back to Juba. Upon arrival in the capital, check into your hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner, reflecting on the powerful cultural experiences of the past few days. Overnight in Juba.
Spend your final morning exploring Juba’s landmarks, including the John Garang Mausoleum and the White Nile Bridge. This is a great time for last-minute souvenir shopping at the local craft market. Finally, transfer to Juba International Airport (JUB) for your departure flight, carrying with you memories and photographs of one of the world’s last great pastoralist cultures.
