Overview

This four-day immersive journey offers a rare and profound exploration of South Sudan’s resilient spirit, centered on the world-renowned Mundari cattle camps. Perfect for photographers and intrepid travelers, this tour provides a front-row seat to a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries on the banks of the White Nile. You will witness the sacred bond between the Mundari people and their iconic Ankole-Watusi cattle, experiencing the mystical atmosphere created by ash-covered bodies and dung-fire smoke in one of Africa’s most authentic cultural landscapes.

What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Mundari Camp

Upon arrival at Juba International Airport (JUB), meet your guide for briefing and assistance with local registration. Depart Juba in a 4×4 vehicle for a 2-hour drive to a major Mundari cattle camp near the Nile. Arrive as the sun sets and thousands of cattle return to camp; witness the lighting of dung fires and the beginning of evening rituals. Overnight: Tented camp at the cattle camp.

Day 2: Morning and Evening Cattle Camp Rituals

Wake up at dawn to experience the most photogenic time in the camp. Observe the Mundari massaging their Ankole-Watusi cattle with ash and using cow urine for hygiene and hair dyeing. Spend the day engaging with the community, learning about their social structures, dowry systems, and tribal markings. As evening approaches, document the dramatic return of the herds through the smoke. Overnight: Tented camp at the cattle camp.

Day 3: Deep Cultural Immersion

Continue exploring the daily life of the semi-nomadic Mundari. Witness the tasks of the children, such as milking and dung collection, and learn about the initiation rituals for young men. This full day allows for deeper interaction with elders and families, providing a comprehensive understanding of their spiritual connection to their cattle. Overnight: Tented camp at the cattle camp.

Day 4: Final Rituals and Juba Departure

Capture your final sunrise images of the camp’s morning routines. After breakfast, bid farewell to the Mundari community and drive back to Juba. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a brief tour of the capital’s landmarks, such as the Konyo Konyo Market, before transferring to Juba International Airport (JUB) for your departure.
