This 4-day expedition starts from Semera, the capital of Ethiopia’s Afar Region, and takes you deep into one of the world’s most extreme and visually stunning landscapes the Danakil Depression. Known for its intense heat, colorful volcanic features, and salt mining culture, this journey offers a raw and unforgettable adventure through the lowest and hottest inhabited place on Earth.
The tour begins in Semera, where you will meet your guide and team. Drive towards Lake Afdera, passing through the vast desert landscapes of the Afar region. Upon arrival, enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake’s saline waters and visit the nearby hot springs, a natural spa experience in the middle of the desert. In the evening, set up camp near the lake and enjoy a starlit night in one of the most remote regions of Ethiopia.
After breakfast, visit the local salt miners and observe their traditional methods of salt extraction. Then, continue the journey to Dodom, the base camp of Erta Ale, one of the world’s only permanently active lava lakes. After an early dinner, begin the 3-hour trek to the volcano’s rim, where you will witness the mesmerizing glow of boiling lava under the night sky. Spend the night camping near the crater, experiencing the power of this natural wonder.
Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the lava lake, a surreal and unforgettable sight. After descending from Erta Ale, drive towards Hamed Ela, a small Afar village near the famous Dallol sulfur springs. Along the way, witness the changing landscapes of the Danakil Depression, where vast salt plains stretch to the horizon. Arrive at Hamed Ela and set up camp for the night.
In the morning, explore Dallol, an otherworldly landscape of colorful sulfur formations, bubbling hot springs, and salt canyons. Visit Ragad (Asebo), where Afar people mine salt by hand and load it onto camel caravans for transport. After experiencing these incredible sites, drive back to Semera, where the tour concludes.
